Walnut Creek Memorial Day Ceremony For Missing Soldiers
WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- More than 80,000 American soldiers who remain missing in action will be remembered in a Memorial Day ceremony in Walnut Creek's Civic Park Monday morning.
The missing soldiers will be the focus of an address by U.S. Navy Cmdr. Renee Richardson, who works for the U.S. Department of Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office in Washington, D.C., event organizers said.
Richardson will discuss the office's mission and its system for personnel accounting and recovery, organizers said.
The majority of missing soldiers, about 73,000, served during World War II. According to the Department of Defense, there are 8,003 soldiers missing from the Korean War; 127 from the Cold War; and 1,693 from the Vietnam War.
Music from the Walnut Creek Concert Band will be played during the ceremony, which will conclude with wreaths laid for each military service branch at the Veterans Memorial Plaza across the street from Civic Park.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Civic Park, located at the corner of North Broadway and Civic Drive in Walnut Creek.
