Walnut Creek Joins Fray Of Cities Trying To Land Lucasfilm Studio
WALNUT CREEK (KCBS) - Walnut Creek has joined the growing number of cities trying to lure the movie empire behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises to the city.
In a letter sent to San Francisco-based Lucasfilm Ltd., the city's Economic Development Department has suggested a movie production studio could be built in the Shadelands Business Park.
Vallejo and Benicia have also reportedly launched attempts to woo George Lucas and his film company.
Lucas recently abandoned efforts to build a new Lucasfilm Ltd. studio on Grady Ranch in rural Marin County, in the face of ongoing neighboring homeowner opposition to the project.
"It's really important to reach out and see if you can bring some more jobs to the community and especially a company as prestigious and reputable as Mr. Lucas' company," said Walnut Creek Economic Development Manager Rob Gerber.
"We really welcome the opportunity to give the representatives of Lucas' company the opportunity to tour with us and get their thoughts," said Gerber.
Walnut Creek has not received an immediate response to its letter.
