Walgreens Opens First 'Fresh Food Oasis' In Underserved San Francisco Neighborhood
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)- Walgreens cut the ribbon on its first "fresh food oasis" in the Bay Area Friday, bringing fresh fruit and vegetables to an underserved San Francisco neighborhood.
The Bayview store at Third Street and Williams Avenue is the first of 13 local Walgreens to receive an overhaul.
KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:
Mayor Ed Lee said it's a good move for the local residents.
"This neighborhood has a history of asking the city to help them find healthier choices, so it isn't just fast foods," said Lee.
James Moore with the Southeast Food Access Coalition said the five aisles of fresh food are long overdue.
"The community now has better choices, and they have healthier choices."
Neighbor Ruth Gravat said she's happy to have other options beyond the corner convenience store.
"This neighborhood seems like it's been so neglected and suffered for so long. Now it's getting special attention. I like that," she said.
Walgreens in Oakland and Berkeley are next in line to receive the fresh food treatment.
