Visitacion Valley School In SF To Reopen After Being Flooded
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Temporary repairs were completed Monday at Our Lady of the Visitacion School one week after being flooded during a water main break in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley.
The school is set to re-open on Tuesday after 3 and a half days were cancelled.
Carpets have been replaced but more permanent repairs will take weeks.
"I'm sorry kids; you'll have to come back to school. No more vacation," said Principal Maxie O'Rourke.
O'Rourke added that heroic work by school staff made the classrooms habitable again, although it could be weeks before the convent and gym are back in use.
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
"[It's] kind of a disaster for us right now because we use the gym heavily for sports," she said.
Damage is believed to be into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The city PUC is examining parts of the broken 48-inch water main to determine what went wrong.
According to the K through 8 school's website, the hardest hit areas were the upper hall hallways, 8th grade, 6th grade and the offices. Grades K-4 received no damage.
PG&E crews were finished with utility work on Monday.
