Meanwhile, Dr. Jill Biden visited wounded soldiers at the VA Palo Alto Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center. It was part of her Joining Forces initiative with first lady Michelle Obama, which seeks to recognize, honor and take action to support veterans and military families.
Army Staff Sgt. Roberto Flores suffered a spinal cord injury when he was shot last month in Afghanistan. He said he was pleased to meet Dr. Biden.
"I'd like to thank Dr. Biden for stopping by. Seeing the importance of her checking in on how the hospitals are treating military families and soldiers," he said. "The importance of making sure that the health care is appropriate for the soldiers."
Flores said he has received excellent care.
Dr. Biden said she was impressed with the resiliency of the patients and the amazing things being done by the health care staff.
The VA Palo Alto Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center is one of five polytrauma rehab centers in the country featuring a range of services including amputee care and treatment for traumatic brain injuries.
