Vallejo School Retains Anti-Bullying Curriculum Amid Debate
VALLEJO (AP) -- Parents whose children attend classes in the Vallejo City Unified School District will not be allowed to opt out of anti-bullying curriculum—including short films with gay and lesbian families—being presented in the schools.
The Vallejo Times-Herald reports that the district's board of trustees voted 4-1 Thursday to retain the "Respect for All" curriculum, which has been the subject of heated debate in recent weeks.
Some parents complained they should have been notified of the content of the lessons and be allowed to pull their children out of the classes.
The curriculum stems in part from a settlement between the district and the American Civil Liberties Union, following complaints of harassment and bullying from a former Bethel High School student.
