Vallejo Police Arrest 2 Cal Maritime Students On Weapons Charges
VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- Two men were arrested Saturday night for firing hunting rifles in the backyard of a Florida Street residence, a Vallejo police sergeant said.
Esteban Eduardo Ugarte, 29, and Nicholas Ryan Salazar, 32, both California Maritime Academy students, admitted they were target shooting at garbage cans in the backyard Friday and Saturday nights, Sgt. Jeff Bassett said.
The two men cooperated with police and consented to a search of the residence where police found black powder, fuses and pipe that could be used to make pipe bombs, and a cache of weapons that included handguns, rifles and shotguns, Bassett said.
Salazar was booked into the Solano County jail for discharging a firearm with gross negligence and possession of an assault weapon. Ugarte was booked for illegal discharge of a firearm with negligence and possession of an explosive device.
Vallejo police also responded to shots being fired at a residence in the 200 block of Arkansas Street around 8:50 p.m. Sunday.
The residents said a white newer model SUV drove by and fired shots at the residence, Bassett said. No one was injured.
"The victims said they had no idea why they were targeted," Bassett said.
Police recovered numerous bullet casings at the scene, Bassett said.
There have been gang-related shootings in the neighborhood, Bassett said.
