Vallejo Officials Look To Improve Dangerous Corridor
VALLEJO (KCBS) – Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo remains a safety concern for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
But now, officials are looking at improvements to the long commercial corridor.
Vallejo chiropractor Dr. John Harrington, who has an office along the boulevard, said it's a dangerous stretch of roadway.
"It seems to be that there's an inordinate number of accidents on Sonoma Boulevard," he said. "In the last two years, three different people have been killed on the street."
Harrington said he witnessed one of those deadly pedestrian accidents just last March.
Vallejo City Councilwoman Marti Brown said that if Caltrans relinquishes its ownership of Highway 29, which is part of the boulevard, it could help matters.
"We really need Sonoma Boulevard to continue to be a state highway, especially when Caltrans doesn't do the best job of taking care of the median, for example, along the boulevard," said Brown.
Caltrans awarded the city a $300,000 grant to hire a consultant to study possible improvements to the road.
Although nothing is in writing yet, slowing down traffic, pedestrian safety improvements, landscaping and efforts to improve median strips will likely be part of the plan.
