Vallejo Motorcyclist Dies In Crash With Big-Rig Near Mare Island
VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- A 57-year-old man died Monday in Vallejo when his motorcycle collided into the side of big-rig truck that was backing up near the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, police said Monday.
Vallejo police were dispatched to the 800 block of Railroad Avenue on Mare Island at 2:57 p.m. about a motorcycle crashing into a big-rig truck, police said.
The first officers on the scene found the driver of the truck and another citizen attempting to perform CPR on the accident victim, police said.
A Vallejo officer took over performing CPR until medical personnel arrived but the victim, Calvin Huggins, a Vallejo resident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:08 p.m., according to police.
Huggins had been riding his 1977 Harley Davidson motorcycle heading south on Railroad Avenue prior to the accident, police said.
The driver of the big-rig, Reginald Miller, 65, of Vacaville, was backing the 55,000-pound vehicle up to make a delivery at a rebar business when Huggins collided head-on into the passenger side of the truck, officers said.
According to police, witnesses reported that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and did not appear to be looking forward at the time of the collision.
Police are requesting that anyone with information about the collision to notify Officer Dan Acfalle of the Police Department's patrol division at (707)648-4013.
