Vallejo May Implement Fees For Blighted Foreclosure Cleanup
VALLEJO (KCBS) – Foreclosed properties in Vallejo are being targeted by city officials who claim that some of them have become eyesores in the neighborhood. Officials are now proposing stiff fines for owners who let their properties go.
The city of Vallejo really suffered during the foreclosure crisis. It was not unusual to see several homes abandoned in each neighborhood. Now, many of those properties have been trashed.
That the city is proposing stiff fines on the owners of foreclosed properties who neglect to maintain those homes.
"It can be weeds. It can be broken windows, or trash and litter that has not been cleaned up," said Vallejo Assistant City Manger Craig Whittom.
KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:
"(The fine) is up to $1,000 each day, up to the cost of mitigating the issue with the property," said Whittom.
He said that the city council is expected to take up the issue at its next meeting. The fines would be imposed against a property owner, or the bank that has assumed ownership.
