USOC Names Los Angeles Official U.S. Bidder For 2024 Summer Olympics
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The U.S. Olympic Committee has selected Los Angeles as the official candidate to bid for the 2024 Summer games.
The decision was announced Tuesday.
The committee originally selected Boston, but that city dropped out of the running due to local opposition. Since then, there was talk of a joint proposal with Los Angeles and San Francisco, but Tuesday's decision names only Los Angeles as the official candidate.
Los Angeles has hosted the summer Olympics twice before, in 1984 and 1932.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the overall cost to host the Games is estimated at $6 billion dollars. That includes $1 billion to build an Olympic village along the L.A. River.
Other venues would include the Coliseum, Staples Center, Pauley Pavilion, Stub Hub and locations in the San Fernando Valley for equestrian and archery.
Paris, Rome and Hamburg are also bidding to host the 2024 summer Games. The International Olympic Committee will vote for their final selection in the summer of 2017.
