University Of San Francisco Buys Historic Folger Building
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The University of San Francisco has announced plans to establish a campus downtown in the historic, red brick Folger Coffee Company Building.
USF purchased the historic property at 101 Howard Street for almost $37 million so that it could move some of its business and technology programs into the city's financial district, said spokeswoman Anne-Marie Devine.
"We're not focusing on an increased number of students, but what programs make most sense to be down in the center of the city," she said.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
The partial move to a location more accessible by public transit also marks a return to the Jesuit institution's downtown origins.
The University of San Francisco opened in 1855 at the corner of Market and Fourth streets before eventually building the current campus clustered around St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Fulton Street north of the Panhandle.
