United Airlines Pulling Out Of Oakland
OAKLAND (KCBS) – United Airlines has announced plans to terminate its operations at Oakland International Airport in June, ending 75 years of service at the hub.
United serves only a small portion of passengers flying out of Oakland, with 11 weekly flights to Denver.
But CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg said it is still noteworthy.
KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:
"Anytime an airline leaves an airport or a market, it's a sad story," said Greenberg. "And in the San Francisco area, my preference of an airport has always been Oakland simply because there's no weather. San Francisco could be closed and Oakland will be operating."
United officials said that the Oakland to Denver flights were just money losers. Greenberg said that the cessation of service is indicative of capacity cutting in the airline industry, especially following the United merger with Continental.
The company will officially end service in Oakland on June 4.
