UCSF Chancellor Steps Down, Takes CEO Position For Gates Foundation
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann will resign from her position to become the CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, University of California officials said Tuesday morning.
In an announcement, UC president Janet Napolitano said she's grateful to Desmond-Hellmann for her many accomplishments.
Desmond-Hellmann has been the chancellor of the campus amid budget cuts that affected the entire UC system and has been involved in the development of the new Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay.
Napolitano said she will convene a search committee early next month to start an effort to select a new UCSF chancellor.
Desmond-Hellmann has agreed to stay on until March and assist with the search.
Napolitano said she will appoint Sam Hawgood as interim chancellor.
