UC Berkeley Cutting 200 More Jobs

BERKELEY (AP) -- The chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley said the campus will have to cut about 200 jobs next year.

Chancellor Robert Birgeneau said a consulting firm hired to help the system save money concluded that the school has too many managers. The campus could save about $20 million by eliminating jobs through attrition, retirements, voluntary separations and layoffs.

Birgeneau said the cuts are expected to happen after January. Campus departments have been asked to find positions that could be eliminated.

UC Berkeley already has cut 600 positions since last year.

The campus' belt-tightening started when the state's budget crisis forced it to cut its expenses by $140 million.
