U.S. Offers $5 Million For Info On Escaped Mexican Drug Lord 'El Chapo'
WASHINGTON (CBS/AP) -- The U.S. government is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of escaped Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
The acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Chuck Rosenberg, also says a tip-line for information about Guzman is being established.
The 60-year-old escaped from one of Mexico's most secure prisons last month via a sophisticated mile-long tunnel that opened up in his cell's shower.
Guzman is the boss of Mexico's powerful Sinaloa Cartel. Recently unsealed indictments revealed the cartel imported cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and other drugs into Mexico, and then smuggled them into San Diego. He is considered to be one of the most powerful and richest drug traffickers in the world.
Mexican authorities have announced a $3.8 million reward for the drug kingpin, who's believed to have a net worth of about $1 billion. In 2009, Forbes listed him as number 701 on its list of the richest people in the world.
Guzman was arrested in February 2014 in a seaside resort town after about 13 years on the run since his last prison break, in 2001.
