Two Stanford Women Attacked On Campus Early Sunday
STANFORD (CBS SF) -- Two separate assaults on female students at the Stanford University campus were reported this weekend, including a sexual assault at a sorority.
A student told university police that at 2 a.m. Sunday a man she did not know entered her unlocked room at the Phi Sig sorority located at 1018 Campus Drive, Stanford University Department of Public Safety spokesman Bill Larson said.
The sorority had held a party at the house earlier that night, said Larson, suggesting that the doors were unlocked, which is how the suspect entered the house.
The victim said the man climbed into her bed while she was sleeping and tried to remove her clothing. She said she awoke, turned on the light, told the suspect to leave her room, and he fled through the door, Larson said.
The victim and a witness described him as a tall, Hispanic man in his 20s, with an average build, standing 5 feet 11 inches tall. The suspect was wearing a red flannel shirt, blue jeans and a gray baseball cap. The victim said that he smelled of cigarette smoke, Larson said.
The incident was reported to the Stanford police on Sunday afternoon.
Another female student reported an assault that happened around 1:45 a.m. Sunday on the other side of the campus.
The victim was walking in Kennedy Grove between the Faculty Club and the Humanities Center on her way home, when a man grabbed her, causing her to fall to the ground. Another man in the vicinity saw what had happened and yelled, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. The female student had no visible injuries and said she did not know the suspect, Larson said.
The victim described the suspect as a white man in his 20s, weighing about 180 pounds and standing around 6 feet tall. The suspect was wearing a dark shirt and a baseball cap at the time of the assault. The suspect had a strong odor of alcohol, Larson said.
Campus security said they do not believe the incidents are related.
