Two Injured In Collision With Suspect Vehicle Following Vallejo Police Pursuit
VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- Police in Vallejo are searching for a suspect who was the subject of a pursuit Friday afternoon that led to an injury collision injuring two bystanders who were hospitalized, according to authorities.
According to Vallejo police, at around 12:20 p.m. Friday, officers spotted a vehicle displaying stolen license plates and initiated a pursuit at Mayfair Avenue and Vervais Avenue.
According to police, the pursuit lasted for a little more than two minutes before the suspect turned the vehicle the wrong way on Redwood Street and officers terminated the pursuit. Moments later, police said the stolen car hit a car on Redwood Parkway next to Jesse Bethel High School, causing the an uninvolved citizen's car to flip onto its roof.
Photos and aerial video footage showed Vallejo police and fire units at the scene of the crash that had one overturned vehicle.
Police said two people who were in that vehicle were taken to area hospitals and treated for complaints of pain after the collision. Authorities did not have any specific details about the victims or the injuries they suffered, but they are expected to recover from their injuries.
The driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene on foot and escaped capture, authorities said.
Witness Michelle Winston told KPIX she saw the driver of the stolen car jump over a retaining wall and run into a residential neighborhood.
"Oh yeah, [the police] were right behind him. And he hopped the wall. And they didn't hop. I don't think they hopped the wall. But they were coming around the corner. Yeah, that wall is pretty high. So he got over that wall. He was gone," said Winston, who watched the drama from her second-floor bedroom window. "I was kind of scared because I was like, 'Where is he at? Is he hiding in someone's backyard or something like that?'"
Police went door to door to search for the man. Residents were told to stay inside. Police searched the neighborhood for a couple of hours, but could not find him.
"I'm going in the house and make sure all the windows are locked just in case he's laying low somewhere," said Winston.
Winston said police detained a woman who was in the stolen car.
A school administrator told KPIX 5 over the phone Jesse Bethel High School was put on lockdown during the search. There were no students on campus because of distance learning. But faculty members were working on campus.
Police are continuing their search for their search for the suspect as they investigate the incident. No suspect description was available.
