Twin Sister Says 'Lucky' Yellow Ladybug Made Her Buy Winning $6 Million Scratcher
SAN RAMON (CBS SF) -- Good luck comes in pairs sometimes.
It certainly came for a pair in the case some twin sisters in San Ramon who hit the jackpot.
It's a one-in-three million chance and twins Laura Poorman and Lisa Toton beat the odds.
"You just never know it's going to be you -- especially something that big," said Poorman.
Something big that started with something very little.
"I looked up at my windshield and I saw a yellow ladybug," said Toton.
Toton took the yellow ladybug as a sign, so she made a pit stop at Fast & Easy Mart to pick up some lottery tickets, including two "Set For Life" Scratchers for her and her twin sister.
The twins have been buying lottery tickets together since they were 18, carefully following their mother's advice to 'find a store with a light out.'
Only the word 'Mart' is lit at the Fast and Easy Mart.
Toton says she was parked at her son's school when she found out they'd won $6 million.
"I'm like 'oh my god,' I am hyperventilating like I was like Kim Kardashian 'ugly crying,' she says.
First thing she did was call her twin.
"I was on a conference call -- a video call at work and she kept calling and calling and calling," said Poorman, who couldn't pick up.
So Toton had to deliver the news via text message: 'Come home now Scratcher Jackpot.'
"And I said 'huh?'"
"And then I said six million… I'm shaking…" says Toton.
"That's when she got my attention," laughed Poorman. "I mean, I'm not coming home for a thousand bucks!"
The twins claimed their prize at Hayward's California Lottery East Bay District Office, Friday.
"I don't even know if it has sunk in yet because it's so ridiculous for us," said Poorman. "I think when we get that first check maybe it will feel a little more real."
But don't think their new found millionaire status will change these two.
"You think like, angels are going to be singing and all this cool stuff is going to happen -- we went to Fuddruckers," laughs Poorman.
"We bought about 20 pairs of socks," adds Toton. "It's been our only splurge, so far."
The twins have shared so much it just made sense to continue to share with this kind of luck. They're going to split the winnings 60/40.
Since Poorman bought the ticket, she gets 60 percent. It's a rule the twins established years ago.
