Tsunami Advisory Dropped For Hawaii, California
HONOLULU (CBS/AP) — A tsunami advisory has been dropped for Hawaii and California after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Chile.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center dropped the Hawaii advisory Thursday morning, followed by California several hours later.
Officials originally issued a more serious tsunami watch for the state shortly after Wednesday's magnitude-8.3 earthquake. But they later downgraded it to an advisory, saying no major tsunami was expected.
The National Weather Service says a 3-foot wave was recorded at Hilo Harbor on Hawaii's Big Island shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday. Forecaster Tom Birchard says he hasn't heard of any significant impacts.
An earlier advisory from National Tsunami Warning Center urged people to refrain from waterfront activities.
