Trying to Fix Golden Gate Bridge Backup

Northbound traffic has been a mess lately on Doyle Drive, leading to the Golden Gate Bridge. Traffic managers think they've figured out why and how to fix it.

The afternoon backup out of San Francisco to the Golden Gate can run half an hour or more, and drivers have been blaming the Presidio Parkway construction project. Mary Currie with the Golden Gate Bridge District says the primary culprits seem to be drivers themselves who are cutting through the visitor parking lot at the south end of the bridge to detour under the freeway and get on Park Presidio. That's backing up the parking lot exit, all the way back to Lombard Street sometimes.

"It is contributing to a northbound congestion, which is already a tricky area," Currie said. "You've got several things merging, then you've got to merge through the toll plaza.

Bridge officials have been meeting with Caltrans to get the state to funnel drivers down Van Ness to Geary Blvd instead, and then out to Park Presidio, instead of having them all get stuck on Doyle Drive.

The Caltrans spokesperson for the project has not been available for comment.
