Truck Carrying Oxygen Tanks Explodes On San Mateo Bridge
HAYWARD (CBS SF) - A truck carrying oxygen tanks struck a wall on the eastbound San Mateo-Hayward Bridge and exploded Wednesday morning, closing two lanes of traffic into the afternoon.
The 26-foot flatbed truck, which was carrying a load of plastic chairs and oxygen tanks, struck a wall midspan and burst into flames at 10:15 a.m., CHP Sgt. John Carman said.
The fire was put out by 10:39 a.m., but the cabin of the truck was destroyed, Carman said.
Two eastbound lanes of state Highway 92 on the bridge were closed because of the fire. Westbound traffic was also delayed, Carman said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver appeared escape injury, Carman said.
