Trapped Driver Pulled From Major I-880 Wreck
HAYWARD (CBS SF) - At least one driver suffered major injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward Wednesday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol sergeant said.
The CHP received an initial report at 3:05 p.m. indicating that five vehicles might have been involved in the crash, which happened on southbound I-880 just south of Whipple Road, CHP Sgt. John Carman.
The first CHP units arrived at the scene quickly, and officers found several southbound lanes blocked by the crash, Carman said.
One driver required extrication, although Carman said it was not clear if the trapped driver was the one who suffered the serious injuries.
A Sig-alert was issued at 3:22 p.m., but the traffic alert was canceled at 3:38 p.m. once two of the three blocked lanes were cleared, Carman said.
The fast lane that had remained blocked reopened at 3:58 p.m., and the Sig-alert was canceled.
