Traffic Signal Goes Up At Deadly Oakland Intersection
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Family and schoolmates of an eleven-year-old Oakland middle school girl, who was struck and killed in a hit and run accident last year, turned on a traffic signal on Tuesday at the intersection where she was run down.
Alana Williams was struck by a hit-and-run driver at 64th and Foothill Boulevard. For the past year, efforts have been ongoing to have a traffic signal installed at the intersection.
KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:
Frick Middle School Principal Jerome Gourdine said the installation of the traffic signal is bittersweet.
"It will not be closure until Alana's killer is found," he said. "This is a positive first step. There's been a lot of changes in the community as a result of this."
A bus stop in the area has also been moved for safety reasons.
The $250,000 signal was paid for by grants and redevelopment agency funds.
