Tornado-Like Waterspouts, Lightning, Gale-Force Winds And Severe Thunderstorm Warning For Northern California Waters
(CBS SF) -- The National Weather Service issued a "special marine warning" as a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms moved offshore, creating conditions that could span waterspouts -- tornadoes over the ocean-- along with frequent lightning, gale-force winds and large swells capable of overturning small vessels.
The areas effected are in coastal waters, and out 60 nautical miles, from the Monterey Bay to nearly to San Luis Obispo. No cities or land areas are affected, but the warning indicates how volatile these conditions are as they move ashore.
The warning for the severe thunderstorms was due to expire at 12:15 p.m. Monday.
Vessels in the area were warned to seek safe harbor immediately.
