Ting's Victory In Assembly Race Affords SF Mayor Double Opportunity
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting's successful bid for a state Assembly seat has created an opening for a possible double play that would let Mayor Ed Lee appoint another ally to the Board of Supervisors.
Lee said one of the top names under consideration for Ting's position would be District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu, a former budget analyst who was originally appointed to the board as well, by Gavin Newsom. Chu now chairs the supervisors Budget and Finance Committee.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
"Whether or not she wishes to do that job is still a question, because I haven't interviewed or talked to anybody about this," Lee said Friday, adding that he would not approach any candidate about the job until after a meeting with Ting over the weekend.
Politics watchers said the double play would be very tempting, even if elevating an experienced staff member from the Office of the Assessor-Recorder were as strong a possibility as Lee suggested.
The mayor's last appointment, Christina Olague, lost the District 5 seat to London Breed in part because Olague voted to let Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi retain his job.
Having a new supervisor represent the Sunset District could affect who becomes president when the new board's term begins in January, analysts said.
