Concord Underground Vault Fire Knocks Out Power To Thousands
CONCORD (AP) - Officials said almost 10,000 Pacific Gas & Electric Co. customers in Concord lost power after a piece of underground equipment failed, sparking a small fire that burned through power cables.
The outage occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. PG&E spokesman Matt Mauman said by the afternoon, power was restored to all but 62 customers although some streetlights were still not working.
Mauman could not say when all power would be restored.
A Contra Costa County Fire Protection District dispatcher said a transformer in the underground vault caught on fire, and that a fire crew was sent out to extinguish it.
There are no reports of injuries.
