During the Christmas holiday, Marge attempts to muster the wherewithal to kick down-on-his-luck Gil out of the house.

The Simpsons make their way to the Springfield sports arena, where a group of Rockette-like ice dancers put on a Christmas show. The show's villain is a Grinch-like creature called the Grumple, who attempts to capture some of the other characters using a large net. The skaters end up getting into an argument with some nearby workers, who are installing some flooring for an upcoming basketball game. A brawl ensues, and Homer joins in, threatening the Grumple and insisting that he restore holiday cheer. Fearing for their safety, Marge ushers the kids out of the arena. They end up in a department store, where Lisa strikes up a conversation with the store's Santa, played by Gil. Lisa tells Gil what she really wants for Christmas: the Malibu Stacy Pony Beach Party Set with Sparkle Sand. Lisa is dismayed because the toy is sold out everywhere. Lisa's spirits soar when Gil emerges from the stockroom with one of the toys. But a short time later, Gil discovers it was meant for his boss's daughter. He's promptly fired. Lisa feels enormous sympathy for Gil, as he not only did a good deed, but he was fired on Christmas Eve. Marge invites Gil over to the house for Christmas Eve dinner. After the meal, Marge invites Gil to stay the night. But on Christmas morning, Marge is shocked to discover that Gil moved his belongings into the house.

Homer tells Marge they have a big problem on their hands. Marge promises Homer that Gil will leave by the end of the day. Marge approaches Gil and tells him he should think about living somewhere else. Gil reminds Marge that it's Christmas, making it difficult for him to find an apartment. Marge says Gil can stay until the holiday is over. But New Year's Day comes and goes, and Gil is still hanging around the house. Homer tells Marge that Gil has to leave, but Marge thinks it would be all right if Gil stays through Martin Luther King Day. Homer says that Marge can't say "no" to anyone. Marge admits it's true. In flashback, we see a seven-year-old Marge suffering the consequences after she refuses to allow Patty and Selma to hide their cigarettes inside her doll house. Later, on Valentine's Day, Gil interrupts Homer and Marge as they share a romantic interlude. Before Marge can ask Gil to leave, the phone rings. Gil gets excited, thinking it might be a job offer from Scottsdale. Instead, it turns out to be a call from Gil's foot doctor, who has bad news. Time passes, and holidays come and go. Gil celebrates St. Patrick's Day with a group of his loser friends. More time passes, and when Thanksgiving arrives, Gil is still living in the house. Flanders thanks Marge for her early Christmas card. This comes as a surprise to Marge, who says the Christmas photo hasn't been taken yet. Marge looks at the card, and realizes that Gil used a photo software program to superimpose himself into a picture of the family. Marge has had enough. She musters the wherewithal to confront Gil.

Marge storms into the house, only to find out that Gil got the job in Scottsdale. Bart and Lisa tell Marge that Gil is no longer an issue. But Marge says she still needs to confront Gil. If she doesn't, Marge fears she'll never be able to say "no." The family drives to Scottsdale, where they see a large billboard for a realty firm. It features a confident-looking Gil. They soon realize that Gil's image is everywhere. But Marge can't let the Gil incident pass. She interrupts a sales meeting and berates Gil in front of his colleagues. Gil is promptly fired. When Christmas rolls around, Gil is back living with the Simpsons.
