The Simpsons - 'Homer's Odyssey' - Season 1, Episode 3
Fired from his job at the Nuclear Power Plant, Homer decides to embark on a campaign to make all of Springfield safer.
Mrs. Krabappel takes Bart's class on a field trip to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Boarding the bus, Bart reluctantly sits next to Wendell, who suffers from motion sickness. When the children arrive at the plant, they are shown a film entitled, "Nuclear Energy: Our Misunderstood Friend." Knowing his son's class is visiting, Homer rides through the plant in an electric cart in an effort to find them. Homer takes his eyes off his driving and crashes into a radioactive pipe, causing the plant to shut down.
Fired from his job for repeated safety violations, Homer finds himself walking the streets. Unable to find a job, his self esteem plummets. Homer smashes Bart's piggy bank for its contents. He slips into a lethargic limbo and contemplates suicide. Leaving a good-bye note, he walks to a bridge to end it all. Lisa finds the note and alerts the family. The Simpson clan rushes across the bridge to stop Homer and are almost run down by a speeding truck. But Homer is able to pull them out of the way just in time.
Like a heavenly vision, Homer suddenly realizes that his purpose on earth is to make Springfield a safer place to live. Homer embarks on a public safety crusade, having speeding bumps, warning signs, and public awareness posters placed throughout the city. Bored with traffic safety, Homer decides to take on the Nuclear Power Plant. Rallying the people of Springfield to his cause, Homer is poised to bring the plant to its knees. Seeing the furor Homer is causing, Homer's boss, Montgomery Burns, offers Homer a position as safety supervisor with a large pay increase. Accepting the job, but promising to campaign for more public safety, Homer tells the mob to go home and rest assured that he will make their nuclear power plant safe.
