The New Bay Bridge: Is It Safe?

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – KPIX 5 News will broadcast "The New Bay Bridge: Is it Safe?" on Saturday, June 22 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. In addition, the special will be re-broadcast on Saturday June 29 at 5 p.m. on KPIX 5 and 7:30 p.m. on KBCW-TV 44 Cable 12.

The 30-minute program will present an in-depth analysis of the construction problems that have prompted safety questions about the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge and put its proposed Labor Day 2013 opening in doubt.

"The biggest question in the public's mind right now is 'IS IT SAFE?' In this special, KPIX 5 News will ask that question and get answers from the people who should know," said Dan Rosenheim, Vice President and News Director for KPIX 5.

KPIX 5 anchor Ken Bastida will host and East Bay correspondent Christin Ayers will provide additional reporting.

The special will include interviews with Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty; the Director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) Steve Heminger; Civil Engineer and Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley, Bob Bea; UC Berkeley Metallurgist Thomas Devine and others.

Bastida and Ayers will ask the questions and get answers that put the prospective safety of the new bridge into full context.

Additionally, the special will profile the eventual users of the new bridge: everyday commuters who will share their experiences and concerns.

Stephanie Danford John and Craig Franklin are the producers of the special, which will also be available for later viewing here on cbsSF.com.
