The Bay Lights Struggling To Raise Funds To Keep Display Going Past Next March
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Organizers of The Bay Lights display on the Western Span of the Bay Bridge remain far from their fundraising goal to keep the light display running well into the next decade.
The Bold Italic reported Wednesday that if the project does not reach its fundraising goal of $1.2 million in the next 26 days, the display will be shut off next March.
A check of The Bay Light's website on Wednesday afternoon shows donors have pledged $314,480, or about 26 percent of the goal. Organizers would need to raise more than $35,000 each day that remains in the fundraising drive to reach $1.2 million.
Organizers said if they are able to reach their goal, they plan to keep The Bay Lights running through 2026.
Donors can give as little as $10 to as much as $50,000 for the fundraiser, with most of the donations tax deductible.
Created by artist Leo Villareal, The Bay Lights were first turned on in early 2013. Dubbed the largest LED light sculpture in the world, the sculpture consists of 25,000 white LED lights and stretches 1.8 miles.
