Thanksgiving Day Is The New Black Friday: Deep Discounts Starting Earlier This Year

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) -- The traditional kick-off to the holiday shopping season may be Black Friday, but retailers are doing things a bit differently this time around by offering some of the deepest discounts on Thanksgiving Day.

Shoppers camped out overnight with sleeping bags, tents and even a fire to keep warm waiting for the Best Buy in Almaden Valley to open up.

Although shoppers can save a lot of money by coming out to stores in person, data suggests that money can be saved by staying at home and shopping online -- but on Thanksgiving Day.

Adobe system analysts crunching data for online shopping trends have found that retailers will discount items on Thanksgiving by 24 percent on average. That's slightly better than Black Friday discounts which average 23 percent. By Cyber Monday, discounts drop to about 20 percent.

"The data indicates that Thursday is going to be the lowest price day of the entire year on average," Adobe analyst Tamara Gaffney said. "By the time we get to Cyber Monday, there are five times more out of stock situations."

There are some deals shoppers can only get in person on Thanksgiving. Known as "door busters," retailers continue to try and get people in the door, increasing the chance that shoppers will spend more money than intended.
