Tassajara Fire In Monterey County Burns Nearly 1,100 Acres, 30% Contained

MONTEREY (CBS SF) -- The Tassajara Fire burning in Monterey County has killed one person and destroyed 10 homes. The blaze was 30 percent contained Monday morning according to Cal Fire.

The fire started Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tassajara and Carmel Valley roads and has burned 1,086 acres, according to Cal Fire officials.

Firefighters were building containment lines, which have been difficult to create because of dead trees and brush and oak trees, according to Cal Fire officials.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Tassajara Road from Carmel Valley Road to Cachagua Road, Cal Fire officials said.

An evacuation center has been set up by the American Red Cross at Carmel Middle School at 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel-By-The-Sea, according to Cal Fire officials.

The Monterey County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is handling large animal evacuations.

The sheriff's office planned to escort evacuees to their homes at noon on Monday. No one will be allowed into the evacuated area without an escort, deputies said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Cal Fire. An estimated 590 firefighters were battling the fire as of Monday morning, Cal Fire officials said.

Meantime, the Laureles Fire burning near Salines is 95% contained. Two homes were damaged in the blaze.

Investigators said it was sparked by a loose chain dragging from a trailer.
