Highway 24 Fire Destroys Lafayette Tennis Club; Evacuation Orders Lifted
LAFAYETTE (CBS SF) -- Evacuations orders issued in Lafayette on both sides of state Highway 24 in response to a fast-moving wildfire were lifted Sunday evening, according to city officials.
A five-acre fire was initially announced by firefighters with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District around 2:45 p.m. It prompted an evacuation order for the area south of Old Tunnel Road and between El Curtola Blvd and Pleasant Hill Road in Lafayette, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District announced.
People fleeing the area were advised to go to Springhill Elementary School, the district said.
Calls came in around the same time for a fire near Highway 24 at Pleasant Hill Road at Condit Road and a fire on the north side of Highway 24 at Camino Diablo, the spokesman said.
There were reports of downed power lines at both locations. At least two buildings were destroyed in the fire, including a tennis club that was described as a total loss and an outbuilding. A residential structure in the area sustained roof damage.
Residents were cleared to return to the areas south of Highway 24 just after 4:35 p.m. Then just after 7:05 p.m. city officials announced that it was safe to return to evacuated areas north of Highway 24, as well.
City officials say that power lines have been de-energized, and the lights are still out. Citing forecasts from PG&E, city officials also said the weather is expected to clear up around 8 a.m. Monday.
