Tenant Suffers 3rd Degree Burns In Vallejo Apartment Fire
VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- A tenant suffered third-degree burns and 20 people were displaced in a fire at a Vallejo apartment complex Monday afternoon, a fire captain said.
As firefighters responded to the blaze, which was reported in the 400 block of Ebbets Pass Road around 4:30 p.m., they were informed of a rescue situation and increased the response to two alarms, Vallejo fire Capt. Dan Sarna said.
Arriving crews saw the fire burning in a second-story apartment and an injured and disoriented man on the balcony, Sarna said.
The man went back inside the apartment and collapsed as firefighters raised a ladder to the balcony, the captain said.
The victim was brought down the ladder and taken to a trauma center for treatment of third-degree burns to his back and arms, Sarna said.
Adjacent apartments on the second floor sustained smoke and fire damage, and nearby units on the first floor had water damage, Sarna said. The fire was controlled in 45 minutes, but firefighters remained at the scene until 7:30 p.m.
Power was shut off to the entire wing of the complex, and the American Red Cross was called in to assist the 20 displaced people, Sarna said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
