Teenage Boy Shot In Salinas On Way To Football Game
SALINAS (BCN) -- A 14-year-old boy was shot while walking to a high school football game in Salinas Friday evening, police said.
The shooting was reported at about 6:25 p.m. near the intersection of Nantucket Boulevard and Newcastle Drive.
The 14-year-old victim and a 15-year-old boy were walking west on Nantucket Boulevard toward the football game at Everett Alvarez High School when a black 1990s Honda pulled up along the curb, according to police.
A teenage boy got out of the car's passenger seat and confronted the two boys, asking them what gang they belonged to. When one of the boys said he was not affiliated with a gang, the suspect took out a handgun and fired several shots, police said.
The 14-year-old was struck in the lower torso and was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital where he was in serious condition as of Friday night. The other boy was not struck by the gunfire, according to police.
The suspect got back into the Honda, which was last seen driving away west on Nantucket Boulevard. The vehicle has not been found, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
This appears to be a gang-related crime, but the two victims do not appear to be associated with any gangs, police said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Salinas police at (831) 758-7250.
