Teen Suspect Sought In Fatal Bay Point Shooting
BAY POINT (CBS SF) -- Authorities have identified an 18-year-old man as the suspect in a Bay Point shooting Thursday that killed a Martinez teen and sent nearby residents inside schools and homes, a Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
The victim, identified as Fernando Gonzalez, 17, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a parked car near the intersection of Marina Road and Inlet Drive, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
Deputies administered CPR on the teen, but he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, according to the sheriff's office. Autopsy results released today show that he died from gunshot wounds to the chest, Lee said.
Investigators believe 18-year-old Bay Point resident Daniel Castano was the shooter and are searching for him Friday, the sheriff's spokesman said.
Deputies searched Castano's Bay Point home following the shooting Thursday but were unable to locate him.
In the hours after the shooting, three nearby schools and a daycare center placed themselves on lockdown and a shelter-in-place warning went out to residents in Bay Point's shoreline area urging them to stay inside their homes.
Detectives are still working to establish a motive for the shooting, Lee said.
Anyone with information on this case or Castano's whereabouts are asked to call the sheriff's office at (925) 646-2441. Those who prefer to leave an anonymous tip may call 1-866-846-3592.
