Teen Killed In Oakland Shooting Had Hopes Of Becoming Firefighter
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- An aspiring firefighter had his life cut short after being gunned down in East Oakland Tuesday night.
Hadari Askari, 15, of Oakland had just begun a seven-week summer work program with the Oakland Fire Department on Monday, a fire official said.
The program, which is a paid internship put together in connection with the Oakland-based nonprofit youth group Youth Uprising, teaches kids the ins and outs of becoming a firefighter, Oakland fire chief of staff Cynthia Perkins said.
Kids learn how to respond to emergencies while remaining calm and collected, get certified in CPR and learn about the fire inspection process while makings rounds in the field, Perkins said.
Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed said that of the 15 students accepted for the internship, Hadari stood out.
"I could tell he was excited about the program and the opportunity to work for the OFD," Reed said in a statement. "He appeared to be a good kid with a good spirit."
Hadari was killed outside a housing complex in the 6700 block of Leona Creek Drive just after 8 p.m. Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said.

Hadari was pronounced dead at the scene around 8:30 p.m., Officer Johnna Watson said. Police have made no arrests.
That shooting was the second homicide reported in Oakland on Tuesday. Police identified the victim of an earlier fatal shooting as Joel Pervoe Jr., 20, of Hayward.
Police believe Pervoe was shot in the 1900 block of 82nd Avenue where two other victims were injured earlier that morning, Watson said.
The other victims, a 21-year-old male and 17-year-old female, both survived, she said.
Pervoe was found at 11:44 a.m. Tuesday by the intersection of Mountain Boulevard and Kuhnle Avenue, at the end of the Seminary Avenue off-ramp from westbound Interstate Highway 580, Watson said.
Watson said police believe Pervoe was driven by friends and was left in the car.
No one has been arrested in connection with the killing, Watson said.
