Teen Alleged Gang Member Leads Salinas Deputies On 50-Mile Chase
CASTROVILLE (CBS SF) -- A teenager was arrested late Friday night after allegedly blowing through a red light in a stolen car and leading deputies on a half-hour, 50-mile chase, Monterey County Sheriff's officials said Saturday.
Around 11:30 p.m., deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on an
SUV that sped through a red light at the intersection of Merritt and Salinas streets in Castroville, according to the sheriff's office.
The driver failed to yield and led deputies on a high-speed pursuit through Castroville.
The chase continued as the suspect drove onto state Highway 183
and through Salinas, topping 120 miles per hour.
The suspect sped onto southbound U.S. Highway 101 until a spike
strip stopped the car near the highway and Teague Avenue in the community of Greenfield, according to sheriff's officials.
Deputies stopped the driver, who was identified as a 17-year-old
documented Norteno gang member with an active arrest warrant.
The suspect, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile,
was also found to be in possession of a loaded gun. He was arrested on suspicion of evading law enforcement officers in addition to gang-related violations and numerous weapons crimes and taken to Monterey County Jail.
