Teen Driver Charged In Fatal Novato Crash
NOVATO (BCN) -- The Marin County District Attorney's Office has charged a 16-year-old Novato boy with felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI in connection with a fatal crash in Novato last week.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Barry Borden said the teen is being tried as a juvenile and will appear in juvenile court on Sept. 30. If convicted, he could be incarcerated until he is 19.
The teen's name is not being released because he is a juvenile.
He also is charged with misdemeanor driving without a license, felony DUI with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more and enhancements alleging he caused great bodily injury and death, Borden said.
The 16-year-old was driving a 1990 BMW containing five Novato High School students that went out of control and was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling cattle on Novato Boulevard west of San Marin Drive around 11:50 a.m. Friday.
The crash killed 15-year-old Isaac Brott, of Novato. A viewing and vigil will be held for Brott at 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Novato, and a Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
The driver and three other passengers were injured. The driver was released from Marin General Hospital and was booked into juvenile hall Tuesday.
The California Highway Patrol said alcoholic beverage containers were found in and around the BMW.
