Tech Report: Verizon To Challenge Netflix In Streaming Market
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Verizon Communications has plans to launch a service that will allow people to stream movies and television shows over the Internet.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid said the move is seen by most as a new challenge to Netflix.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:
"Verizon is already a player in media. They have a service in many cities called FiOS which delivers Internet and television, very much like AT&T's U-verse," said Magid. "Apparently, this service is not going to be available in their markets because they don't want to cannibalize the existing equivalent of cable television service. They want to expand to all the rest of the markets by competing with Netflix, Hulu and all the other services that deliver streaming video."
Reuters is reporting that the new service could be rolled out sometime in 2012.
