Tech Report: House Works On New Protect IP Act
PALO ALTO (KCBS) – United States Representative Bob Goodlatte of Virginia was the featured speaker at a town hall meeting in Palo Alto on Tuesday, telling the crowd that the House is working on its own version of the Protect IP Act.
The Senate's plan would shutdown websites accused of violating copyright laws.

KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid was also in attendance and said the Senate's Protect IP Act has met a lot of resistance from both legislators and Silicon Valley businesses.
"This has gotten a lot of criticism from Silicon Valley. A group of venture capitalists complained. A number of tech companies are concerned," said Magid. "It would authorize a variety of techniques to cut off access to sites that have been deemed to be infringing. It is kind of like a death penalty to the sites. There is a lot of concern that there would be no due process and it would be unfair and it could actually punish people that are innocent."
Goodlatte said a House bill is most likely to be introduced in the next few weeks, with hearings scheduled for mid-September.
