Tech Report: Google's Online Market Share Continues To Swell
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Just how popular is Google? An internet monitoring firm says the site now accounts for more web traffic in North America than Facebook, Twitter and Netflix combined.
That's nearly 25 percent of all net traffic. Frankly what astonishes me here is how much bandwidth Google is using in this case. Video uses an enormous amount of bandwidth (of course Google owns YouTube) and then factor in the enormous amount of mobile traffic going through their servers with every Android device.
Think about all the advertising networks that Google is affiliated with or owns; that makes a huge impact too.
The last time this survey was taken, Google accounted for roughly six percent, so it's a significant jump. Even game consoles (although Google doesn't have it's own) are caching data.
It's no wonder they spend about $1 billion a quarter in infrastructure improvements. They're laying fiber in Kansas City; here in Mountain View, where I live, they have Wi-Fi, so they have a huge footprint.
Google's Web Traffic
I wonder and have asked them why they give away all these things and one of the things they say is 'We want people to go on the internet' because the more we go online, the more money they make.
It's obviously true since the company sort of touches us on so many levels when we do go online.
There are other players like Microsoft with Bing (even though the company overall has its troubles) and even Apple and Facebook are out there, but as far as web traffic goes, no one is close to comparing to the amount that Google gets.
