Tech Report: Google To Revamp YouTube
(KCBS) – The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is working on a major overhaul of its popular video website YouTube, as it looks to divide it into channels.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid said the site would be divided into premium channels, many of which would feature professionally-produced content.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:
He said Google plans to spend upwards of $100 million on the upgrades to the website.
Although these are still just preliminary reports, Magid said the upgrades could come as soon as later this year and it would be a move by Google to get into more than just consumer-supplied video content.
He also said he wouldn't be surprised if there are charges or a subscription-based service related to the new content.
The move comes as many consumers are either using their laptops to watch TV or watching programming from the internet on their televisions.
