Tech Report: Google Getting Rid Of iGoogle, Several Other Features
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- On Monday we talked about Apple dumping its MobileMe service, but it turns out they aren't the only high-tech giant doing away with some failed features.
On Tuesday, Google announced they are getting rid of five products including iGoogle and Google Video.
In 2005 iGoogle was launched to great fanfare as a way to personalize your Google experience. You would go to a special Google page that would have your bookmarks and local weather, news and Gmail all in one place.
KCBS' Tech Report:
The company is now saying that it's no longer that important and that its purpose has eroded over time, thanks to all the apps that personalize the experience on Google Chrome and on smartphones.
They didn't mention tracking cookies enable Google to know a bit about you without you necessarily having to say it.
Dropping Google Video wasn't as big of a deal because it's been in a coma ever since they acquired YouTube several years ago.
The company is thinking about a smooth transition for iGoogle, which is why they are giving users of the service until fall 2013 before shutting it down.
