Tech Report: Feds Release New Guidelines On Facial Recognition Technology
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has issued new guidelines on how facial recognition technology should be used. The usage guidelines are meant as a way to protect the privacy of consumers.
Some of the guidelines from the FTC are fairly obvious, such as not putting facial recognition-equipped signs in bathrooms or where children gather.
The agency is also advising that companies should be transparent about what data they're collecting and how the information is being used.
KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid:
The FTC said the guidelines are not necessarily a template for law enforcement actions or regulations. But the agency warned that if a company uses facial recognition technology in ways that are deemed deceptive or unfair, it can take action.
It's still unclear exactly how or if the FTC will be able to enforce the new guidelines.
