Northbound I-880 Reopens After SUV Crash That Toppled Steel Beams
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A woman driving at a high rate of speed on Interstate 880 in Oakland early Saturday lost control of her SUV, slammed into a construction project, sending three massive beams tumbling onto the roadway.
The California Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 3:45 a.m. on northbound I-880 at the 23rd St exit.
Investigators said a 28-year-old Hayward woman was at the wheel of a Ford Expedition traveling 80-100 mph when she lost control, careening into the highway overpass construction project.
The force of the collision heavily damaged support beams holding up three 85-foot-long girders that are part of the 23rd Avenue overpass project. The massive girders crashed across the northbound lanes. Fortunately, no other vehicles were struck by the beams.
The woman suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. She was arrested on DUI charges.
All northbound lanes of the freeway were closed after the crash.
One lane reopened at 10:50 a.m. and the other three were cleared for traffic at 11 a.m. more than seven hours after the suspected DUI crash forced the closure.
