BART Recovering After Suspicious Package Shuts Down Hayward Station
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- BART trains are once again stopping at the Hayward BART station after police investigated a suspicious package there on Monday evening, BART officials said.
The service disruption was reported on Twitter at 4:42 p.m.
Almost four hours later, BART officials reported that trains are stopping at the station, but that a 10-minute delay remained.
BART spokesman Jim Alison said the station closed, with no through service, as BART police investigated the package.
"There is a major delay system wide in all directions," BART officials said shortly before 7 p.m.
BART officials said trains could not pass through the Hayward station and would likely not be able to do so until almost 8 p.m.
Alison said trains traveling south were turned back at the Bay Fair station and trains traveling north only went as far as the South Hayward station.
BART officials recommended passengers who needed service through Hayward to take the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus service.
AC Transit said it was honoring BART tickets and a bus bridge was in place as of 6:00 p.m. Bus #10 provided service between Hayward and Bayfair, while Bus #99 is provided service from Hayward to South Hayward and beyond in the Fremont direction.
