Suspicious Package, Overhead Wire Problems Disrupt SF Muni Lines
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Service on San Francisco Municipal Railway's light rail system was disrupted on two routes because of separate incidents Thursday, according to agency officials.
The Muni Metro N-Judah line was affected when San Francisco police investigated a report of a suspicious package in the city's Inner Sunset neighborhood Thursday afternoon, a police spokesman said.
The package was reported shortly after 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Irving Street and Arguello Boulevard, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.
People in nearby homes and businesses were told to shelter in place, and surrounding streets were shut down, Shyy said.
The package was later determined to be harmless and the scene was cleared a short time later, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
The incident disrupted N-Judah service, with trains switching back outbound trains at Carl Street and Hillway Avenue. Inbound trains were turned around at Judah Street and 19th Avenue, Muni spokeswoman Kristen Hollandk said.
Bus shuttles supplemented service in the affected area, Holland said.
Earlier, another Muni light-rail vehicle stalled at Castro station Thursday morning, blocking inbound Muni Metro service, a Muni spokeswoman said.
Muni spokeswoman Kristen Holland said an L-Taraval train stalled at about 10:50 a.m. because of a problem with an overhead wire just west of the Castro station.
The problem stopped inbound Muni Metro service on the L-Taraval,
K-Ingleside and M-Ocean View lines between the West Portal and Van Ness stations, Holland said.
Repairs were made to the overhead wire and service on all lines was restored just after 5 p.m., Holland said.
