Suspicious Device At Hercules Police Station Deemed Safe
HERCULES (CBS SF) -- A bomb squad determined that a potentially explosive device brought to the Hercules Police Department by a citizen on Wednesday afternoon was not a threat, a police spokeswoman said.
A citizen initially came to the Hercules Police Department at 2:58 p.m. to dispose of what he believed was a fake bomb, Van Putten said.
The man told pole he found the device about two months ago in an open field near Sycamore and San Pablo avenues. He placed the item in a paper bag and brought it to the police department lobby on Wednesday, according to Van Putten.
Upon inspection, it was determined that it was possibly a real explosive device and Walnut Creek Police Department's bomb squad was called to the scene for further examination.
Shortly after 3 p.m., the building was evacuated and people in the nearby Hercules Senior Center, Samara Terrace Senior Apartments and Hercules Library - which had children inside - were ordered to shelter in place.
The Walnut Creek Police Department's bomb squad responded at 4:15 p.m. and at 5:50 p.m. the bomb squad determined that the item was not actually an explosive device, Van Putten said.
The scene was determined safe and the shelter in place was lifted.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
